The 5th International seminar on Earthworks in Europe that will take place in Prague, Czech Republic in 2022 has for aim to promote good practice of earthworks in all kinds of civil engineering construction as well as to exchange information between professionals regarding planning, designing and constructing earth structures. Introduction

• During severe dry seasons in Thailand, several road embankments over soft ground especially those adjacent to irrigation canal failed due to rapid drawdown in the irrigation canal.
• Site investigation & soil exploration were conducted to identify the cause of failure & to propose an effective engineering solution.
• Design alternatives e.g. cement columns, bearing piles with load transfer platform etc. were considered to increase the long-term stability of road embankment adjacent to irrigation canal in the case that no lateral support (e.g. hydraulic pressure) existed under the dry condition.
