Created by ASCE in October 1996, the Geo-Institute (G-I) combines the talents and perspectives of its members to promote the Geotechnical profession and enhance career development through specialty conferences, journals and practice-oriented publications, educational programs, networking and coalition building, technical committees and task forces and leadership on emerging issues. The 12,100 members and 63 organizational members of G-I include scientists, engineers, technologists, and organizations interested in improving the environment, mitigating natural hazards, and constructing economically engineered facilities.
On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee for the 20th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE 2021), the Technical Committee and the host Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS), we are delighted to welcome you all to ICSMGE 2021, to be held in Sydney, Australia, from September 12 to 17, 2021.
The theme of ICSMGE 2021 is “A Geotechnical Discovery Downunder – Geotechnical Diversity Awaits You”. Discover Australia and discover the innovation that lies where practical problems meet leading theoretical developments. ICSMGE 2021 will focus on the application of theory and the discovery that comes when world-class minds are focussed on the geotechnical problems facing our world. Our conference program and technical sessions reflect this emphasis on applications, and are designed to trigger collaboration, innovation and discovery from a diverse group of participants.
Australia is a unique land and a diverse country in every way imaginable – in culture, population, climate, geography and history. The identity of all Australians, but especially our Indigenous Australians, is shaped by our relationship with the natural environment. Sydney, as host city, has much to offer the tourist, with a diverse range of attractions. It is a multi-cultural city and its people are warm and friendly and very happy to greet you with a welcoming “G’Day!”
The Australian Geomechanics Society, the host society for ICSMGE 2021, truly embodies the diversity of our profession, welcoming geologists, engineering geologists, soil mechanics, rock mechanics and geotechnical engineers – practitioners and academics alike, who come together to help advance the profession in Australia and beyond.
ICSMGE 2021, Sydney, is an opportunity for delegates to make that once in a lifetime trip downunder and discover why there’s nothing and nowhere quite like Australia.
In May 2022, the global community of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering practitioners will come together in Sydney, Australia for the 20th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE). For the 7th time, young geotechnical practitioners will have the opportunity to meet at their own dedicated Conference on the days immediately prior to the ICSMGE in a relaxed, friendly and supportive environment to share their research, ideas and experience, build international networks and discuss the challenges facing young geotechnical engineers in a rapidly changing world.
Our Conference will be held at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour, Sydney over the three days prior to the ICSMGE giving delegates the opportunity to remain in Sydney for the main Conference.
This Conference seeks to provide a relaxed and supportive environment for young geotechnical engineers to present at their first major Conference with all delegates given the opportunity to present. We will have a particular focus on sustainability and on issues facing young geotechnical professionals beyond 2022.
The organising committee look forward to welcoming you to the 7th International Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference in 2022.
